The school district nurse asks for all parents and students to help prevent back-to-school illnesses by:

• Covering ones cough and sneeze with an elbow;

• Get plenty of activity, fruits and vegetables, and sleep;

• Stay home when one is ill;

• Stay home with temperature of 100° or higher;

• Stay home if vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours;

• Stay home if one has a severe cough;

• Stay home if one has a sore throat;

• Stay home if one has eye drainage (pus) and/or fever or eye pain;

• Stay home if one has suspicious skin conditions;

• Stay home if one has signs of other acute illnesses. If placed on antibiotics, a child must be on the antibiotics for at least 24 hours before returning to school.

• Stay home if ones’ child has a chronic health condition, and has not received information from health services, contact the District School Nurse Sadie Terwey at sterwey@isd726.org.

If it is essential a student must take medication during the school day, the following protocol will be followed:

• The school must be provided with a written physician’s authorization and permission from parent/ guardian every school year in order to administer medication;

• Prescription medication must come to school in a pharmacy-labeled bottle. Medication will be administered according to written directions on the label;

• Students with known life-threatening food or insect sting allergies should talk to their doctor about keeping emergency medication at school;

• Students may possess and use asthma medications as defined per Minn. Stat. 121A.221. The parent, school nurse and doctor are involved in making this determination. Parents must notify the health office if their child will be carrying an inhaler or Epi-pen and also provide an extra inhaler or Epi-pen to be kept in the health office;

• Administration of over-the counter medication (including acetaminophen and ibuprofen) requires written authorization from a parent or legal guardian. In special situations, a verbal request from a parent will be acceptable and is to be followed with written authorization;

• An adult must bring student’s medication to the office.

• Complimentary and alternative medicines will not be administered.

If one has any specific questions or concerns please contact the School District Nurse, Sadie Terwey, RN at: sterwey@isd726.org.
