The Becker School Board met Monday to discuss the MSBA Conference, staffing of the principal position, discussion on the supervisor position, a financial audit, the 2019 levy and a policy on hiring committees.
MSBA Conference
Dr. Stephen Malone said all school board members are registered for the MSBA Conference Thurs., Jan. 17 and Fri., Jan. 18.
The theme this year is “Student Achievement: Passion, Perseverance, and Possibility.”
A flier describing the conference was distributed by Malone.
“This is an excellent professional development opportunity and I encourage board members to attend,” he said. “If you cannot attend, please notify me by Fri., Dec. 8 so that we can cancel your room at no charge to the district.”
Principal Position
Malone said the timeline and process for staffing the high school principal position is from Oct. to Dec. for research, December for updating the position and developing an initial list of candidates. January, they will gather input from high school staff members and in February, the position will be posted.
By the end of February to mid-March, the committee will finalize membership of selection committees and communicate interview dates. By early to mid-March, they will initiate screening of applicants, finalize interview questions and processes and schedule interviews. The process will conclude with the selection of a candidate in March. The timeline is coordinated to involve the next superintendent.
Dr. Jean Duffy, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction is leading the process as part of her internship toward obtaining licensure as a superintendent.
KDV Financial Audit
KDV, the school district auditors, presented the 2018 financial audit.
The beginning fund balance as of July 1, 2017 was $905,606. In 2017-18, revenues and other funding sources totaled $28,847,462 with expenditures totaling $29,239,536, showing a net change balance of -$156,441. As of June 30, 2018, the ending fund balance was $749,165.
Malone said the June 30, 2018 unassigned fund balance is 2.3% of expenditures. District Policy 714 fund balances states the school district will strive to maintain a minimum unassigned general fund balance of 8%.
Truth in Taxation
Kevin Januszewski, director of business services, presented the truth in taxation information and recommended approving the payable 2019 levy in the amount of $10,502,780.
This total represents a 5.1% increase in comparison to the 2018 levy.
Interview Committees
A policy for school board representation on interview committees was read and adopted.
