Road Work the Main Topic at Santiago Township

The Santiago Township board meeting took place on July 9 and the following topics were discussed — Sheriff’s Report, road report, and solar panels.

Sheriff’s Report

There were a total of 63 calls for service. Two of those were for disturbing the peace and one was for a stolen vehicle.

Road Report

A motion passed during the road report to approve the Aztec Seal and Coat micro seal. Ditch mowing was done as well as the removal of downed trees. There was discussion about the road on 59th Street. The Twp had debates over whether to use Class 5 or to use crushed concrete. The problem with crushed concrete is that it will wash away in the rain. Other roads need to be tended to first before the 59th Street road is worked on. However, the road will have gravel put on it so it goes higher than the culvert.

Solar Panels

The meeting ended with more talk on solar panels. It was brought to the board’s attention that the panels can cause fungus to grow on vegetables that are nearby. As of now, the board cannot stop owners from putting in solar panels on their property. There are concerns with how new solar panels are and the negative effects it may have on the earth in the future.
