DESPITE A RECENT ARREST OF TWO SUSPECTS, police are still asking homeowners to keep an eye on suspicious activity around mailboxes and to not use personal mailboxes to mail letters or packages.

Police Arrest Two, But Mailbox Thefts Still On The Rise

The Becker Police and Sherburne County Drug Task Force have arrested two people in the area of Jenkins and Monroe Streets involving theft of mail Tuesday.

The names and identities of the suspects have not been released.

Part of what was recovered were a drivers license and credit cards. Police said it would appear one victim may have charges on their credit card already.

Mail thefts have also been reported in Stearns County.

Stearns County Sheriff's officials say calls came from residents in Avon and Brockway Townships and the city of Holdingford in Mid-August. Callers reported their mail boxes being left open and mail missing. Several residents had placed bills for mail carrier pick-up the following day, but the bills were missing from the mailbox before the carrier arrived.

Others told investigators they had been expecting checks via the US mail and suspect they were stolen.

Kelly Johnson of Becker had a package delivered to her home stolen while she was out of town last month. She said she arranged to have friends come over to check on her dogs and retrieve her mail daily, but they reported they never saw a package with her mail. Johnson said she contacted the post office and they said the package was delivered — either left on or near the mailbox (since it didn’t fit the regular-sized mailbox.

“I never got it,” she said.

She also said her sister, who lives just down the block from her, had a situation occur around the same time where her mail and the mail of her neighbors were mixed in together in all the mailboxes — as if someone had rifled through it.

Mail thefts are escalating throughout the country including the states of North Carolina, California, Texas, Pennsylvania, Utah and parts of Canada — all within the last three weeks.
