Pack 94 Cub Scouts Honor Ole Ohlgren

Dozens of people gathered at St. Marcus Church in Clear Lake last Saturday to have some fun and pay tribute to a special person.

It was the annual Pinewood Derby for Cub Scout Pack 94, and the scouts remembered former Clear Lake Legion Charter Member Ole Ohlgren by dedicating a new Pack 94 flag in his honor.

Ohlgren, a great supporter of the scouts, died last August at the age of 85.

During the opening flag dedication ceremony, Pack 94 Cubmaster Brent Benson spoke about Ohlgren.

“He was the charter representative. He came to several of the pack functions over the last several years. He was a great guy who really enjoyed the scouting program. He was a true supporter.

“Ole passed away last fall. To remember him we are dedicating a new pack flag in his honor.

“His favorite kind of event was the Pinewood Derby. I don’t think he missed any of them. I know he was at all the ones I’ve been to. He really enjoyed this event, so I’m pretty certain he’s here with us today. It just seems fitting that this would be the event where we would honor him.”

The yellow flag carries the words: “Pack 94 American Legion Post 352.” A plaque, also dedicated in his honor, reads: “In memory of Ole Ohlgren, 1928-2013, Clear Lake American Legion Charter Representative.”

After a moment of silence, the scouts recited the Cub Scout Promise. Then the Derby began, with race after exciting race - four cars at a time.

At the end, Nathaniel Waage took the top prize. Logan Anderson finished second and Jacob Waage placed third.

There were lots of other awards for various categories.  The first two were voted on by scouts and parents.  The remaining are selected by the race committee.
