Olson New Owner Of Cw Plaza

Clearwater is known throughout Central Minnesota for many things, but the number one reason the city is well-known throughout the state and beyond is the Clearwater Travel Plaza.

This week the family-owned truck stop welcomed a new owner, Dave Olson of Clear Lake.

Opened in 1976 by Don Nelson and his wife, Rose, the Plaza has grown over the years from a small truck stop to the iconic destination it’s become today, featuring the Nelson Bros. Restaurant and Pub, Nelson Bros. Bakery, Holiday gas station, food court, and their gift shop, Minnesota Reflections. They even offer catering with Nelson Bros. Cutting Edge Catering.

A separate fuel center for professional drivers offers a driver’s lounge, cooking station, showers and driver supplies.

“I wasn’t exactly looking to sell the Plaza,” said second-generation owner Joel Nelson. “But once I met Dave I knew my family legacy would be in good hands.”

Olson and his three adult children also own a few convenience stores and two additional truck stops; Olson’s Truck Stop in Hasty and Trucker’s Inn in Sauk Centre.

“I’ve had my eyes on the Travel Plaza for years,” said Olson. “It’s extremely well-known, has a great reputation, and has been running successfully for decades. My family and I are excited for this new opportunity and look forward to being a part of the Clearwater Travel Plaza family.”

Olson and Nelson are planning on a seamless transition from the hands of one family to another, with Olson planning to keep the Clearwater Travel Plaza and Nelson Bros. Restaurant and Bakery running as is.

“Why come in and change a business that’s been running successfully for years?” he said. “Everything loved about the Travel Plaza will remain, including the commitment to service, community, and donuts the size of your face.”

“Everything my family and I have built has brought me to this point,” said Nelson. “I’m excited for Dave and his children to continue growing the Plaza businesses, and I’ll be cheering for their success along the way.”
