Oakwood Blessing Community It Serves

Oakwood Church in Becker will once again open their doors in a special way to aid the needy later this month.

July 26, Oakwood Church and its congregation will hold a sort of “free” garage sale called a Blessing Tent.

“We know there are a lot of hurting people, people not being able to buy new things or furnish their homes and we’d like to help those families get what they need,” said Pastor Gerry Bass last year. “We call it the Blessing Tent because we want to bless people.”

The church is currently open to anyone in the community willing to donate unused and clean items to their charity event — items not sold at garage sales or items deemed to be salvaged at a thrift store. People are being asked to drop the items off at the church to give away in their Blessing Tent.

The “catch” is there really is no sale — everything is given away for FREE!

The Blessing Tent event is July 26 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and donations to the event are being accepted up until July 25.

Items sought by the organizers of the event are household items, clothes, furniture, books, decorations, etc. They also request the items be new or slightly used.

Whatever the church is unable to give away at the end of the event, they plan to donate to Goodwill or the Salvation Army.

Pastor Bass said his group of volunteers will departmentalize all the items donated so it’ll be easier for customers to locate just what they are looking for. The volunteers will also be on hand at the church to direct customers to the specific areas of need.

“This event is not just an event for our church members but for anybody and everybody in the community who has a need,” said Bass of the event.
Bass also said it’s a good opportunity for people holding garage sales to empty their garages following their sales by donating unsold items to the church.

“We do not intend to receive anything in return for blessing our community,” said the pastor. “We only want to see families in need get blessed.
