The Big Lake American Legion Baseball team won two more games over the past week.
Vs. Rush City
Last Thursday the Hornets got a good pitching performance from Liam Mayer and the offense came through in an 11-4 win over Rush City.
Big Lake scored a run in the first. Caleb Martin walked and stole second. After Connor Lundquist walked one out later, Martin scored on a double steal for a 1-0 lead.
Rush City tied the game in the home first, then went ahead 2-1 with a run in the fourth on three walks and a single.
But Big Lake put together a big inning in the fifth. Dillon Spaeth had a leadoff double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball. After Dawson Veldhuizen, Tyrone Fjone and Dreeson Millam walked to load the bases, Martin singled to drive home two runs. Millam scored on a passed ball and Martin came home on a groundout by Mason Spoden for the fifth run of the inning.
Rush City came back to score two runs in the fifth on a walk, two singles and an error to cut the gap to 6-4.
Big Lake extended its lead in the sixth. With two outs, Millam doubled and went to third on a passed ball. Martin singled him home, stole second and went to third on an error. He scored on a single by Spoden for an 8-4 lead.
The Hornets weren’t done yet. In the seventh, Nehemiah Rousu singled, Spaeth singled and Veldhuizen walked to load the bases. Then walks to Millam, Martin and Lundquist plated three more to bring the score to 11-4. It stayed that way when Martin, pitching in relief, struck out the final three batters to end the game.
Mayer got the win. He allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit and four walks in 3.1 inning. He struck out five. Martin allowed two earned runs on four hits and five walks in 3.2 innings. He struck out six.
At the plate, Martin was two for three with four runs batted in. He also walked twice, stole three bases and scored three times. Spoden singled and drove in two runs. Spaeth had two hits, a walk and scored twice. Lundquist had a single, three walks and an RBI. Millam doubled, walked twice, drove in a run and scored twice. Veldhuizen walked twice and scored two runs.
Vs. Mora
Last Tuesday, Big Lake took an early lead and went on to beat Mora, 8-2.
In the first, Millam walked and Martin singled. Two outs later, Spoden drove them in with a double. After Kaeden Tidrick was hit by a pitch, Mayer walked to load the bases. Veldhuizen walked to force in a run, then Fjone was hit by a pitch to drive in the fourth run of the inning.
Mora got a run in the third on two singles and a walk off Big Lake starter Millam.
The Hornets got that run back in the home third on two walks and when two different batters were hit by pitches.
Big Lake got its final three runs in the fifth. Tidrick singled and came home on a triple by Mayer. Mayer scored on a bunt by Veldhuizen. Then Fjone single, stole second and came home on a single by Martin for an 8-1 lead.
Mora got its final run in the seventh off reliever Lundquist on a walk, a passed ball and a steal.
Millam got the win. He allowed one run on two hits. He walked two and struck out 10 in six innings.
At the plate, Martin had two hits, a walk, drove in a run and scored one. Spoden doubled and drove in two runs. Tidrick singled, walked and scored twice. Mayer tripled, walked scored a run and drove in one. Veldhuizen had a walk and two RBIs. Millam walked twice, scored a run and drove in one. Fjone singled, walked, scored a run and drove in one.
Big Lake played Princeton Thursday, results next week. They host Lakeville North Monday and Zimmerman Tuesday at 7 p.m.
