During last month’s Big Lake City Council meeting, Nick Paine was recognized as the 2023 Big Lake Outstanding Citizen of the Year. Paine was selected due to his long history of volunteerism in the community. Paine has volunteered with Spud Fest for 14 years (serving as vice president for 12) and with the Sherburne County Fair Board for 12 years (serving as vice president for three years.) Paine has also volunteered with the Big Lake Little Hole Fishing Tournament, United We Shiver, Women of Today Spooktacular Trail, and Veterans Memorial Freedom Rock. Paine thanked the individuals who inspired him to pursue volunteerism.
Open Forum
Oran Gunnell spoke during open forum regarding an issue he had with his property. His backyard floods often. In working with the city on a solution, City Engineer Layne Otteson conducted an unofficial survey which hinted that there may be grading issues. Gunnell requested that council consider authorizing an official survey using escrow funds from LGI Homes, the developer of his house. Gunnell mentioned he would also be meeting with the developer personally.
Donations Towards Summer Events
Each year, the city hosts several public events during the summer. The first Movie in the Park event took place earlier in the month, and the next will be in September. Farmers Market takes place each Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. (hours changing to 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in September.)
The first Music in the Park event will be June 1, featuring Rockin’ Hollywoods. The event will also feature a classic car show, food trucks, and a beer tent.
All these events are made possible by local donors. City staff expressed their gratitude for the local businesses and organizations who supported these events.
Public Works Report
Norm Michels, director of streets and fleet, gave his update for the month. He noted that his staff has been training with fire hydrants and has been working on crack sealing.
In addition, they have been working on park cleanup. Park patrons may notice that the new flags are finally up, and Michels thanked the American Legion for funding the project.
Student Liaison Report
The Student Liaison reported that student council is working on a teacher appreciation project, which includes videos from students thanking teachers. Student council was also going through applications for next year’s members.
The middle school recently held their history day, and two students qualified to go to state, and one earned an honorable mention.
Finally, students recently released their “Be Real” project, which showcases why students choose to remain substance-free.
In Other Business,the Council:
• Approved a final plat for Big Lake Car Condos Third Addition;
• Proclaimed May 21-27 as Public Works Week in recognition and appreciation of the public works employees of the city;
• Approved a drainage easement for the Blackbird Laundry Co.
