Mostly from just the kindness of her heart, Big Laker Rebecca Scheiber (shy-ber) is offering free hair-dos to any high school student looking to get all dolled up for prom.
Scheiber has been doing the free hair-dos for three years now and is now serving Becker, Big Lake, Monticello and Annandale.
The surprise is she is not a professional hair stylist with a salon. She is actually a physical therapist assistant at Home Health Care, Inc.
“I started doing hair-dos for friends when I was in high school,” said Scheiber, who attended Albany HS. “Then I started doing wedding parties for family and friends and it took off from there.”
Rebecca says it sort of spurred something in her when she saw some kids she went to school with get teased because they couldn’t afford to get professional hair styling done.
“It was kind of sad to see some kids who couldn’t afford the clothes or hairstyles get picked on and I wanted to try and help,” Rebecca says.
With Becker’s prom on the calendar for April 23, Big Lake’s for May 7, Monticello’s for April 16 and Annandale’s for June 3, Scheiber has been fielded requests and booking appointments for those special days.
“I usually have no problem accommodating anyone who calls,” she says. “Even right up to the day of the event, I a lot of times can find a slot.”
Scheiber, 30, has a fiance´ named Brian and is a graduate of Anoka Ramsey Community College with an A.A.S. degree in physical therapy. She also attended Bemidji State where her minor in school was music.
“Yeah, I sing and play piano and have played a little fiddle,” Rebecca says. “I used to be with a couple local bands, Country Crossing and Blurred Vision.”
Rebecca is also a softball coach and is in her 12th year with the sport. She just recently accepted a head coaching position with the 14U traveling softball team out of Big Lake.
She also likes spending time with family and friends and Brian, singing and going fishing.
Besides hair-do’s, Scheiber can do coloring and has many different styles of braiding and up-do’s in her repertoire. She can also match a style if the student brings in a picture of something she likes.
With her big-hearted soul in helping others look beautiful on their special days, Rebbecca only accepts tips and donations to help cover the costs of her supplies.
“People are usually very generous,” she says.
“Prom can get very expensive and I realize not every girl can afford a pretty updo so that’s where I come in,” she said.
