The Mighty Mississippi River isn’t quite as mighty this summer, with the severe drought being experienced in most of the state bringing the river level down to historic low levels. According to the U.S. Geographical Survey (USGS) National Water Dashboard, the Mississippi is at an all-time low in the area for this time period. Many locals say this is the lowest they can remember ever seeing the river.
Although people in kayaks and other small watercraft can still navigate the river, the newly exposed sandbars and low water levels have been causing problems for larger craft further down the waterway.
