During October and November, students at the Becker Middle School read and discussed the book, Wonder by RJ Palacio during advisory class. Two weeks ago, those students got the opportunity to see the book come to life right before their eyes as they attended a special screening of the movie at the St. Michael Theater Nov. 17.
Wonder was published in 2012 and has been a favorite of BMS students since its release. The library owns 17 copies and the novels are often on a waiting list —even all these years later!
Wonder shares the story of Auggie Pullman, a young boy with a facial deformity who enters public school for the first time as a fifth grader. Auggie is a wonderful character and through the story, readers see how his life is greatly impacted by his family, himself, the kids in his new school, and his amazing teacher, Mr. Browne.
Wonder is funny and sad, heartbreaking and heartwarming. The focus of the whole story is kindness, and "choose kind" is the mantra of fans and readers.
Although many of the middle schoolers have read Wonder on their own in the last few years, BMS staff was excited to share it school-wide.
There are a variety of individuals/groups that helped make this opportunity a possibility: The PTSA funded the trip to the movie St. Micheal Movie Theater, who opened their doors allowing over 730+ individuals to come and view the premier on a Friday morning. Other thank yous go out to Director of Transportation Tom Risley, School Counselor Julie Fox, as well as the staff and students at BMS!
