Clearwater resident Maddie (Madeline) Helget placed first runner up overall and first runner up in state costume at the Miss Teen United States pageant this July.

“I’m so honored for my first runner up placement at nationals,” said Helget. “I know I did my best to make Minnesota proud.”

Helget was crowned Miss Teen Minnesota United States in March, making her eligible to compete at the Miss Teen United States pageant in Orlando, FL. The now 20-year-old won the titles of Miss Minnesota Teen and National American Miss Teen in 2016.

The pageants she’s chosen to participate in have allowed her to advocate for the elderly, a cause she is passionate about. She has gained a lot from the experiences.

“The main thing is that I truly learned who I was and what my passions are,” said Helget. “Pageants push you past your limits and show you what you’re capable of. I gained confidence and lifelong skills that will benefit me forever. I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity to be part of such an amazing activity.”

Helget will continue out her year as Miss Teen Minnesota United States and will also be continuing her volunteer work at care centers through her “Young at Heart” campaign, which works to bridge the gap between the elderly and youth through intergenerational activities. Her main focus has been working with the Girl Scouts, bringing them in to the Annandale Care Center where she’s training to be a home health care aide.

Along with her personal campaign, she is involved with Comfort Keepers and Adapt-A-Grandparent, organizations that also work to benefit senior citizens.

Although Helget hasn’t made any definite plans, she hasn’t ruled out participating in more pageants.

“Maybe in the future you’ll see me competing for Miss USA!” she said.

She once again expressed thanks to her sponsors, Mathison Motors in Clearwater, Parts City in Clearwater, Peterson Dental in St. Cloud, Kelly Klatt Photography in Monticello, and Scruples Hair Care Products based in Lakeville.

Helget is a 2017 graduate of Annandale High School. This fall she will be attending St. Cloud Technical and Community College for a degree in sonography. Her goal is to work with pregnant mothers.

Helget’s family includes her parents Joe and Cori, and brothers Jack and Ben.
