Lynden Township Supervisors Dave Johnson, Jerry Finch and Anne Ackerman discuss appointments to the planning commission during their meeting Monday night.

Lynden Township Discusses Temporary Dwelling Usage

Resident Sarah Schroeder approached the Lynden Township Board during their meeting Monday night to discuss the use of a temporary dwelling on her Co. Rd. 44 property.

Schroeder explained she’s been caring for her parents, who have fallen ill, and is speaking with a contractor about building a permanent home on the property, which she hopes to have completed before winter.

Supervisor Anne Ackerman informed her county ordinance allows for the use of temporary residences for up to six months while building, which would be applicable in her case.

The board supplied Schroeder with contact information for Building Inspector Nancy Scott, and asked her to contact them if there was anything else she needed.

Jerry’s Towing
Jerry’s Towing, who will be relocating from Hasty to 20026 Empire Rd., informed the board they have a dealer’s license to sell impounded vehicles that aren’t picked up.

The board determined they would need to ensure vehicles aren’t stored on shore land, as the edge of the property is along the Clearwater River, and that the area is screened as necessary.

The planning commission will perform a site visit, and a public hearing was set for July 25 at 7 p.m.

Driveway Complaints
Supervisor Dave Johnson informed the board the county would be following up on the 4th Ave. E. property driveway relocation, however the township will need to ensure the mailbox post will be replaced with the proper one. The 911 sign has been moved back to its correct location.

The township received a complaint that a property on Eaglewood Rd. has two driveways. Johnson informed the board he had looked into the complaint and believes it to be unfounded.

The owner has been using a path for the purpose of tree removal, however there is no evidence an actual driveway has been established. Johnson will continue to monitor the property.

Planning Commission
Ackerman informed the board Gary Stang and Brian Nickolauson’s appointments to the planning commission would expire this year. Stang has already indicated he would be willing to serve another term.

“As much as I fully respect every member on the board, I’m troubled by the fact that we seem to have problems getting people to attend the meetings,” said Johnson. “I understand the reasons they aren’t able to attend, but I’m going to state for the record I’d like to see more participation into the planning commission meetings than we’ve seen.”

A suggestion was made to appoint Jeff Westrum as vice chair to run the meetings when Chairperson Nickolauson was unable to attend.

A motion carried reappointing Stang to another five-year term; Nickolauson will be asked if he is also willing to retain his seat on the commission.

Other Business
Resident Roger Brown inquired as to why chemical had only been applied to portions of Lake Maria Rd. Supervisor Jerry Finch explained at the time of the application they only had enough for the front of the homes along the road, however as soon as they received more product the project would be completed.

Brown also inquired why his road wasn’t cleared of snow until one or two days after the main road was plowed. Finch explained roads were cleared in accordance to the amount of traffic on each.

However it shouldn’t take days to complete.

He asked Brown to let him know if it happened again in the future, and Ackerman indicated the board would look into the matter in the meantime.

Ackerman informed the board there has been more progress on cleaning up the property on 146th Street, however the deadline for completion had expired so an administrative citation would need to be sent to the property owner.

The next Lynden Township meeting will be August 7 at 7 p.m.
