Low Turnout For Primary As Expected

Turnouts were low (as expected) at Tuesday’s primary election in Sherburne County as voters descended upon city halls and township halls to cast their votes to narrow ballot preferences for this fall’s general election.

Tuesday’s primary was also an opportunity for some election judges to get their first-ever experience with the new voting machines some precincts purchased. The voting machines allow for the ballots to be inserted and the tallies electronically transmitted to the county immediately.

In the race for Sen. Dave Brown’s seat in District 15, Republican Andrew Mathews beat out Dan Whitcomb, 63% to 36% to win the GOP ticket. Democrat Chilah Brown outdueled Rob Passons for the DFL ticket by winning in a 58 to 41 percent margin.

Tom Emmer (GOP) won his race for the 6th Congressional District by a large margin over A.J. Kern and Patrick Munro. Emmer captured 68% of the vote while Kern took in 26% and Munro just five percent. On the DFl side, David Snyder won over his challengers to be on the ticket against Emmer this November. Snyder took in 46% of the votes while Judy Adams got 37% and Bob Helland 16%.

In Sherburne County, John Riebel (incumbent) collected 52% of the votes and Tim Dolan (33%) for the Becker commissioner area while Bryan Lawrence (49%) and Lisa Fobbe (38%) took the Zimmerman commissioner area. All candidates  will be on the ballot in November for seats on the Sherburne County Board.

In Wright County, Tom Perrault and Derek Vetsch took in 39 and 30% of the votes to get their names on the November ballot for the Wright County Commissioner Board.

At the state level for supreme court, Natalie Hudson (incumbent) will be facing Michelle MacDonald for the supreme court associate justice position. Hudson received 65% of the votes while MacDonald took in 20%.
