Kids come out for Clearwater fishing contest

Kids in Clearwater had a blast last Saturday competing in the Fishing at Mill Pond event held by the Clearwater Sons of the American Legion (SAL).

A total of 57 kids participated in the annual event held at Riverside Park, registering 69 fish including northern pike, walleye, bass, sunfish, bullhead, sucker, and shiner. It was a perfect day for fishing, and kids and adults lined the banks of the river and waded out into the shallow areas.

Each child who registered was given bait and tackle, and a fishing pole if they didn’t bring one. Hot dogs, cookies, and pop were available for the kids to rejuvenate themselves before they went back out.

Prizes were awarded for first, second, and third place. Fourteen year-old Levi took home first place with his two pound northern pike, Porter received second place with his 13 oz. bass, and two year-old Jeremiah won third place by bringing in the most fish – 17 sunfish. A drawing was also held, allowing every child to go home with goodies.

“We love giving to the community and the community loves it,” said SAL Commander Bud Schindele.

SAL members extended a thank you to Stop Light Bait, which donated the prizes, and sponsors Big Rock Sports, Coborn’s Clearwater, Kwik Trip, Parts City Auto, and Rassat Outdoor Group.
