Huso stops by Veteran’s Dinner in Big Lake

One-hundred-and four-year-old Stella Huso — purported to be the nation’s oldest Gold Star Mother — arrived to participate in the special Veteran’s Dinner put on by the Big Lake American Legion and Auxiliary Post/Unit 147 Saturday afternoon at Big Lake Twp. Hall.

Dozens of veterans and their families poured into the township hall Saturday to congregate, catch up with each other and enjoy a delicious meal served by the Auxiliary women of Big Lake and catered by The Pork Chop Guys.

Huso, whose portrait is depicted on Big Lake’s 31-ton piece of granite (Freedom Rock) at Lakeside Park, is a Gold Star Mother which is an organization of American mothers who lost sons or daughters in service of the United States Armed Forces. Stella lost her son, Wayne in hostile action in Vietnam in August 1969.

Saturday’s tribute to veterans was a huge success and thanks go out to all the volunteers and associates involved in giving the living veterans and their families a special meal on a special day with a special guest.
