SANDY LOGRONO resigned as principal at BHS.

High School Interviewing For Principal Position

The Becker School Board met July 3 and discussed the adoption of two policies, the reading of three policy revisions and strategic planning toward 2018-19 goals.

Malone Report
Malone stated at Monday’s meeting that interviews were conducted for the high school principal position last week (Sandy Logrono resigned and Mark Kolbinger stepped down as Asst. Principal).

The interview team included administrators, high school teachers and a school board representative.

Four candidates were interviewed June 26 and two interim candidates were interviewed June 27. Malone said he is recommending Rick Toso for the position of Interim High School Principal for the 2017-18 school year. He said the position will be advertised as a vacancy next spring to hire a long-term principal.

Malone saud the MSBA Summer seminar is Aug. 7. He told the board members to let him know if anybody would like to attend.

Malone plans to attend the MDE annual superintendent conference at the Minneapolis Marriott Northwest in Brooklyn Park, Tues. and Weds., Aug. 8-9. He is also planning a governance education presentation for the school board Aug. 3 regarding the trimester schedule at the high school.

Policies Adoption
Malone said he recommends adopting the Mandated Reporting of Child Neglect or Physical or Sexual Abuse policy which adds reports of known or suspected child sex trafficking involving a child who is identified as a victim of sex trafficking to the definition of sexual abuse.

He also recommended adopting the Enrollment of Nonresident Students policy, requiring the superintendent to post the lottery procedure on the school district’s website in the event that a grade level is closed to open enrollment. The policy change will also delete the lottery procedure previously required by statute.

Policy Readings
Malone recommended the first readings of the student attendance, wellness and uniform grant guidance policies. The student attendance policy revisions would reflect current practice while the wellness policy has revisions to comply with USDA requirements.

The uniform grant guidance policy was developed in 2016 by MSBA’s Council of School Attorneys (COSA) and was recently added to the MSBA’s mandatory policy list.

Strategic Planning
Malone said the school board should continue discussing potential areas for the 2018-19 school year. The 2017 stakeholder input, previous board goals, and a historical MMR percentile ranking were provided in an attached document.

The goals discussed last month were: A). Grades 1-8, 10 and 11 will increase achievement by a positive Z score in reading and math comparing the actual to expected growth as determined by testing in the Fall of 2017 for NWEA to the Spring of 2018 and Spring of 2017 to Spring of 2018 for MCA; B). Implement a sustainable mental health delivery model in each school; C). The high school and intermediate school will rank in the 80th percentile or higher in comparison with other Minnesota schools as measured by data available in the fall of 2021.

Malone said the 2017 strategic planning ideas and exit outcomes need to continue to be discussed and evaluated.

Malone finished up by going over the board’s 2012-18 goals and their statuses and highlighted the ones most pertinent to address.
