At last month’s Big Lake City Council meeting, Community Development Director/ Big Lake EDA Executive Director Hanna Klimmek gave a community development update to council.
Housing
Klimmek said single-family building permit applications issued year-to-date totaled 26 with five in review
Klimmek said the following projects are in production including:
• Crossings Phase II – 38 Affordable Townhome Rental Units (Developer – Duffy Development);
• Station Street Apartments Phase 1 & 2 – 70 Market Rate Rental Units (Developer – Kuepers, Inc.);
• Sandhill Villas (HOA) – 12-Unit Single-Family Development Project (Developer – Troy Siemers);
• Marketplace Crossings I & II – 120 Market Rate & Affordable Rental Units (Developer – CommonBond);
• Big Lake Station – 125 Affordable Rental Units for Family’s and 55+ (Developer – Aeon);
• Avalon Estates – 108 Units for 55+ (Patio Homes, Twin Homes, Apt. Building), (Developer – Avalon Homes).
Commercial/Industrial
Klimmek noted the following commercial/industrial projects in Big Lake including:
• Minnco Credit Union – New construction/new business (Opened June 22);
• Wastewater Treatment Facility – City facility expansion (In construction);
• Great River Federal Credit Union – New construction/new business (Waiting on final applications);
• Nystrom & Associates – New construction (Working through preliminary applications).
Permit Activity - June
Klimmek said there have been 11 single-family permits issued totalling 23 in 2020. She said there were zero multi-family permits issued in June with just two totaled on the year.
Four commercial new/remodel/addition permits were issued in June to bring the YTD total to 14. Remodels/decks/misc. had 40 permits pulled, totalling 153 on the year. Thirteen permits for HVAC/mechanical were approved, bringing the YTD total to 42.
Eighteen permits were issued for plumbing projects, totaling 46 on the year. Twenty-seven permits were granted for zoning projects, bringing that yearly total to 98. There were zero land alteration permits issued (just three YTD) and two fire permits were granted, bringing the total to 12 in 2020.
Permit Revenue – June
Total permit fees in June totaled $91,850.22 with plan reviews coming in at $32,256.42 for a grand total of $124,109.64.
Permit Activity – 2020 Summary
The 2020 total valuation equals $19,288,779.50 through June 30 with $247,852.59 credited to permit fee and plan reviews.
Comparisons
Klimmek said 40 more permits have been processed so far compared to 2019; $109,257.03 more fees have been collected in the month of June, 2020 than in June of 2019; $100,633.79 more fees have been collected YTD than in 2019.
