DERBY WINNER. Clearview sixth-grader Christopher Benson built one final Pine Box Derby car, even though he is now too old to compete himself. He crafted this "Crayola(r) Special" in honor of art teacher Kathy Gerdts-Senger, and the Crayola company, which provides art supplies to primary schools. "I knew she'd like it," he said, when asked how he got the idea to build it.

Derby Car A Work Of Art

While Clearview sixth-grader Christopher Benson is now too advanced in age to take part in the Pine Box Derby competition that draws millions of Cub Scouts from around the nation, he had an idea for one last special car that he just had to complete.

Drawing on the skills he learned in classes with art teacher Kathy Gerdts-Senger, he built a bright yellow “Crayola® Special” car using the blueprint specifications required to complete an official competition car. Crayola also provides art materials to elementary school, including Clearview, so the project was a perfect way for him to close out his racing career and his last year at the school.

And it was also his way of honoring a favorite teacher.  “I knew she’d like it,” Christopher said, when asked what motivated him to build the car this year, even though he could not race it himself.
