County Busy With Road Construction

It’s been a busy year for road construction in Sherburne County, but good weather has helped projects move along without as much disruption as in some rainy years.

The biggest project in Big Lake was reconditioning/surface improvements on Co. Rd. 5 (Eagle Lake Road) between Plymouth Ave. and Park Ave. West. That project was substantially completed just before Spud Fest in late June, with just a few miscellaneous cleanup items left.

The mill and overlay project north of the city on Co. Rd. 75 between Co. Rd. 5 and Co. Rd. 4 is also completed.

Surface improvements on  Co. Rd. 24 from Co. Rd.  23 to the Elk River Bridge, within the City of Becker – has been completed with the exception of some miscellaneous clean up items.  The road is open to traffic.

On Co. Rd. 6 in Clear Lake, all the culverts have been replaced. The contractor has finished the first layer of pavement and is expected to complete the final lift any day.

The bridge on Co. Rd. 6 over the Elk River south of Co. Rd. 16 will use state bridge bonding or federal funds for replacement. Bridge plans have been submitted to the state. That project has been delayed until the summer of 2018 because of the lack of funding.

The reclaim and overlay project on three different segments of Co. Rd. 3 (between Hwy. 10 and Co. Rd. 20; from Co. Rd. 23 to Co. Rd. 11 and from Co. Rd. 11 to Co. Rd. 5) has been completed. The county used State Aid Funds for the project.

The Co. Rd. 53 bridge replacement in Clear Lake Twp. also used federal funds. The county and contractor are working to final the project.

The first lift of pavement on the mill and overlay project on Co. Rd. 8 between Hwy. 24 and Co. Rd. 16 is completed. The final lift is expected to start Aug. 21.

Bids were opened for the reconditioning project on Co. Rd. 11 between Co. Rd. 4 and Co. Rd. 16 and Knife River got the contract. Construction started Aug. 7 and is expected to be completed in June, 2018. The majority of work, including the first lift of pavement will be completed by the end of October, with the final lift of pavement being placed by June, 2018.  The work being performed this fall requires the road be closed and detoured.  The road is scheduled to be open to traffic by the end of October.

The reconditioning/reclamation project on Co. Rd. 4 from Hwy. 169 to the east county line is a federal project and is combined with the City of Zimmerman’s realignment of Fremont Drive, MnDOT’s signal upgrade at Hwy. 169 and the resurfacing of Co. Rd. 4.

All work is completed and the county is working with MnDOT, the City of Zimmerman, and the contractor to final the project.

The contractor has completed the centerline culvert replacements on Co. Rd. 42 between Co. Rd. 1 and Co. Rd. 45.  The road surface improvements are scheduled for the first part of September. Turn lanes will be constructed sometime before the road surface improvements are made.

Bituminous overlay on Co. Rd. 72 from Co. Rd.  35 to Co. Rd. 32 has been completed.

The project to widen shoulders and reclaim and overlay on. Co. Rd. 45 to Rum River Drive is scheduled to be completed  by the end of October. The road will be closed and detoured for the duration of the project.
