Wednesday afternoon the Sherburne History Center held a coffee and book signing with Ken Martens. Martens is the author of The Perilous St. Croix River Valley Frontier. He spoke about his research into that topic and had many fascinating stories to relate. The St Croix valley is considered the “birthplace of Minnesota” because Minnesota Territory was established there after Wisconsin became a state in 1858. The river’s name means “holy cross” in French, and several legends propose reasons why the river was given that moniker. Martens’ book covers a significant amount of Native American history, relating stories of battles in the region.
The Sherburne History Center hosts many educational and community-building programs including monthly book club and family history classes, and family-friendly programs.
