Co. Rd. 81 Phase I construction begins October, runs thru August

(Editor’s Note: The following article was submitted by Sherburne County.)

Sherburne County will be improving Co. Rd. 81 from Lake Ridge Drive to Co. Rd. 73. Work will consist of reconstructing the roadway to accommodate 2-12’ driving lanes with 6’ shoulders (4’ paved and 2’ gravel). Right turn and bypass lanes will be added at designated intersections to provide for safer turning movements. The 90-degree curve at 206th Street will be removed and replaced with a larger curve. These improvements will create a safer corridor for the existing and future traffic. The reconstruction will be performed in two phases:

• Phase one – Scheduled from October thru December 2021. Work will be confined to constructing a portion of the larger curve at 206th Street. The contractor will clear the trees and then haul granular material over the poor soils to ultimately compress them to support the new roadway. The granular material will be piled to a height of approx. 16’ above the existing ground and will remain there until it is removed in the spring of 2022. This work will require that Co. Rd. 81 be closed east of 206th Street and detoured. The detour will be tentatively from October 2021 thru May 2022. Residents living on 221st Avenue west of Co. Rd. 81 and those living on 206th Street will only have access on Co. Rd. 81 from the south. See the layout map of the work area, road closure area, and the detour.

• Phase two – Scheduled from May thru August 2022. This phase will complete the new alignment at 206th Street and reconstruct the remaining portion of Co. Rd. 81 from Lake Ridge Drive to Co. Rd. 73. This work will also require that Co. Rd. 81 be closed and detoured. The detour will be tentatively from May 2022 thru August 2022. All residents will have access throughout the project. However, there will be times during construction when they will need to access their streets either from the south or from the east on Co. Rd. 81. See the layout map of the detour.
