Clearview Elementary School was filled with cheers and shrieks of laughter as Principal Sheri Rutar and four teachers received pies in the face.
To keep students motivated during the school’s recent walk-a-thon, the students were told if they made their goal of $20,000, their Phy Ed teacher George Bineusa, art teacher Anna Barton, music teacher Diane Jones, school counselor Lisa Wannebo and Principal Sheri Rutar would all get pies thrown in their faces.
Challenge accepted. The students ended up raising over $25,000.
Last week Rutar and the teachers lined up on stage in the gymnasium in front of a sea of students, all eager to see them get ‘pied.’ Students who participated in the fundraiser had their names put into a drawing for the chance to throw a pie.
It was all for a good cause. The money raised from the walk-a-thon goes back to Clearview students for educational purposes including field trips, classroom needs, family fun nights, assemblies and other enrichment opportunities used to supplement the curriculum.
“We were thrilled with the response to our new online platform,” said PTA President Lori Johnson. “We had higher participation, meaning any dollar amount, as well as students creating webpages to easily share with friends and family from afar. We had donations from 36 states and three countries!”
The event is the PTA’s major fundraiser each year.
