Clearview Elementary fifth graders had a chance to speak their minds during the annual Optimist Elementary Kids Speak Out contest.
Sponsored by area Optimist Clubs, the Speak Out contest was held throughout elementary schools St. Cloud District 742, with students at each school given a teacher-chosen topic to write a two to three minute speech on.
The students gave their speeches at their schools, after which each school chose their top three speakers. Fifth graders Harper Peterson, Theran Carlson, and Ruby Gosch were awarded the top spots at Clearview, with Peterson placing 1st, Carlson 2nd, and Gosch placing 3rd.
The winning students from each school were then invited to give their speeches in front of family, friends and Optimist Club members, where they were also awarded medals.
Students in the competition are judged on traditional speech skills, including introduction, eye contact, body language and conclusion. Public speaking helps students gain confidence and improve communication skills.
