Clearview Students Collect Food For The Needy

Clearview Elementary School was again the scene of abundance this month as they wrapped up their annual food drive, collecting a total of 631 pounds of food.

Tables in the school’s hallway were overflowing with boxes, bottles and cans after students collected nonperishable food to be donated to the Clearwater/Clear Lake area food shelf.

Clearview’s student council sponsored the food drive.

“We decided to do a food drive to help kids who are starving and don’t have enough money to afford food,” said fifth grader Braeden D.

“We go around to classrooms from the first day of March to the ninth to ask if their class brought any food and then we collect it,” said fifth grader Jaxon K.

Braeden explained they only collected nonperishable food, so students could bring in canned tomatoes but not a fresh tomato.

“We did a presentation for one class because they wanted to know more about the food drive,” said fifth grader Kyla W.

To help get students excited about the project and bringing in food, they were told the class that had the most donations would win a secret prize.

Clearview Student Council consists of students in fourth through sixth grade. In order to become part of the group, interested students need to write a letter telling the advisor what their thoughts are and what their commitment will be. From that point, two students per classroom are chosen for the year.

“I like helping the community,” said fifth grader Madden Q. “It’s cool to tell people I’m in the student council and it’s fun.”

“You get a behind-the-scenes look at how the school works,” said Braeden.

After all the food drive donations were totaled up, Profesora Lucia’s first grade class came out on top, winning themselves a pizza party.
