British Invade Bhs Spring Choir Show

Though the logistics of moving masses of students on and off of the stage in the new Performing Arts Center at Becker High School had the directors feeling some minor butterflies before the curtain went up, the show was a definite hit with the audience that filled nearly every seat in the vast facility Monday night.

The program was billed as “The British Invasion,” and featured trans-Atlantic melodies from the 1960’s through the present day, with students performing enthusiastic covers of classics from The Beatles,  Rolling Stones, Elton John, Dusty Springfield, Petula Clark, Tom Jones, Queen, Spice Girls, Eurhythmics, Adele, and many others.

The 11th Annual Spring Choir Show was directed by Gretchen Bordson and Kristi Lovold, with percussion by Erika Bakke and guitar by BHS senior Joe Perry.  The emcees for the evening were Andy Johnson, Logan Johnson, and Dexter Woltman, all of who performed in a wide variety of songs in addition to their management duties.

The evening began with a rendition of a Beatles classic, “I Wanna Hold Your Hand,” with Andy Johnson, Joe Perry, Josh Drury and Nick Norgaard channeling the Fab Four to enthusiastic applause from the packed house.

The evening was filled with fine performance moments, including soloist Andy Johnson bringing his Mom Lynel onto the stage to be surrounded by a chorus of guys as they sand the Tom Jones hit “It’s Not Unusual.”  Other bright spots included John Lennon’s “Imagine” with soloist Matt France and a rendition of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” featuring Joe Perry on the guitar and soloists Justin Kimmerle, Alaina Nelson and Jackson Lefebvre fronting a fine ensemble group.  Perry was featured again in a duet with Sara Gretsch on the Wham! hit “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go,” backed by dancers Brittany Bodien, Briana Baumgartner, Lindsey Baloun, Alex Laudenbach, Mariah Zerwas, Mikayla Hiltner, Bridget Buchholz and Heather Sanders.

The performance ended with a soulful rendition of The Beatles’ “Hey Jude,” featuring the choir seniors and soloists Alex Laudenbach, Logan Johnson and Michaela Manifold.  The performers were lit by spots on the darkened stage, with many holding up lit smart phones or tiny lights to create a mystic stage picture as they encouraged the audience to sing along.

The three emcees then presented Bordson with the traditional spray of flowers as she thanked the staff, crew and performers for their work on the show.

Seniors performing in the show included the following:  Logan Andersen, Lindsey Baloun, Blake Barthel, Karly Bauer, Sydney Benda, Kate Berning, Eric Blomgren, Brittany Bodien, Dawson Brown, Emma Buntrock, Riley Defries, Josh Drury, Jade Erson, Hayden Fassler, Kaylea Fox, Matt France, Jacob Feldshuh, Sara Gretsch, Sammy Gruber, Sam Haugen, Kayla Hemmelgarn, Austin Hill, Shelby Huebert, Kalley Jackson, Andy Johnson, Logan Johnson, Savannah Johnston, Joe Kimmerle, Joleen Klinker, Alex Lauderbach, Alyssa Ludens, Michaela Manifold, Sydney Mastey, Kris McLaughlin, Megan Murphy, Nick Norgaard, Isabelle Norheim, Matt Paulson, Rachel Pena, Joe Perry, Katie Pursley, Adam Rasmussen, Hannah Robinson, Gabby Robles, Paige Roesler, Katlyn Roisland, Carolyn Schneider, Aimee Schulz, Alex Tople, Rebecca Tripp, Caleb Vekved, Michael Veldman, Chris Weberg, Kaylee Welker, Dexter Woltman, Zach Woolhouse.
