BLFD Open House is a Blast!

Members of the Big Lake Fire Dept. — along with other public servants from the local sheriff departments, emergency services and other jurisdictions — saw a plethora of citizens and their families descend on the fire station to honor the people who put their lives on the line every time a call comes in.

On a grey and chilly day, families donned their heavy coats, hats and mittens and visited the BLFD Saturday at the station. A state trooper helicopter landed in the grassy area and guests were invited to get up-close and personal with the craft and its pilots. Another chopper, this one from North Memorial Health also made an appearance.

Rescue trucks, boats  and gear were also on display inside and out.

Inside the station, families huddled for warmth and received a free lunch served by the firefighters and volunteers. Two bouncy castles were set up outside the station for some fun for the youths and demonstrations were held throughout the day to show how sprinklers work and how to keep one’s house safe.

The Minnesota DNR had a truck parked outside where guests could get a view at the equipment the officers use and get explanations of their duties.Smokey the Bear was also on hand for photo opportunities.

There was even some face painting opportunities for those brave enough to get paint on their skin.

The American Red Cross had volunteers manning a table where they had flyers and brochures for people to take to explain what they do and how people can help in their cause. A member with Center Point Energy was alos manning a table that had many handouts and giveaways for children and adults.

Big Lake’s Beyond the Yellow Ribbon had a table to aprise everyone of what the organization does and they had giveaways for vistors while they lasted.

The scores of visitors Saturday showed how important the community feels the local fire department is as well as the other emergency services and its people.

On to next year!
