The Wave Youth Center in Big Lake kicked off its summer programming this month. After being shut down for most of last year, the center is making its “reintroduction to the community,” in the words of Kat Nau-Jackson, executive director. The youth center aims to be a safe, welcoming place for middle schoolers and, to a lesser extent, high schoolers.
They are located at 171 Lake St. N, next to Spirit Life Church, across the street from City Hall. The center is open daily from 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. Interested parents and students can view their website at TheWaveYC.org.
Who Can Join?
The youth center is open to all middle school students, regardless of whether they attend Big Lake Schools. The center has resources for all students, whether they only want to come and have fun with their friends, or if they need help coping with various issues in their lives. Their goal is to create, “a space where kids are accepted as they are and feel like they are safe and belong,” as they state on their website.
Projects and Activities
During the time they were shut down, The Wave offered to-go craft and activity boxes, which were very popular. They will still have a strong focus on hands-on activities and crafts for the kids. DIY projects creating bath bombs, ice cream, pillows and tie-dye t-shirts will be available for the students who come to visit during May. There will also be fun games and activities such as kickball, trivia, and theatre games. Virtual activities will be offered Fridays.
Later in the summer, organizers hope to get the students out in the community, to visit the lake, go bowling, and try other activities Big Lake has to offer.
Nau-Jackson says the organization is always looking for feedback and input from the community in order to improve their program and offer the kids whatever they need.
Fundraising Event at Pebble Creek
The Wave has an upcoming fundraising event. They will be hosting a golf scramble at Pebble Creek June 19. Businesses are encouraged to sponsor holes, donate gift cards and silent auction items, and sign up to play. They are also looking for volunteers to help run the event. More information can be found at the center’s website or by emailing Director@TheWaveYC.org.
