The Big Lake American Legion Post 147 has announced its new home in downtown Big Lake. The Legion will officially begin operations April 1 in the former West Sherburne Tribune office on Lake Street and Hwy. 10.
The Legion, Auxiliary and Big Lake Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Committees will hold meetings and stage for various community events, announces Commander Paul Seefeld. It will also serve as an office for their charitable gaming operations, managed by Jessica Slimmer.
“It’s good to have a place to meet and let the community know we’re alive and well,” said Seefeld.
The Legion has approximately 100 members and has met for the past several years in the Big Lake Police Dept. Community Room and in the Senior Room at Big Lake City Hall. They celebrated their 100th birthday recently.
The Legion is a busy organization. Besides performing for Memorial Day services, they attend to the Big Lake Memorial Park in downtown Big Lake, hold an October Veteran’s dinner at the Big Lake Twp. Hall, participate in the Spud Fest parade and Veteran’s services at the Big Lake Schools. They provide school scholarships and contribute to the BLPD Canine Program, the Big Lake Food Shelf and the Youth Center, the Wave. They contributed $30,000 to the Food Shelf in a recent year.
The Legion does charitable gaming activities, including bingo and pull-tabs at The Buff (formerly the Friendly Buffalo).
