Tuesday, Big Lake City staff hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil a new bike fixing station at the Big Lake Train Station.
The fixing station includes a bar to rest the bike on while working, an air pump for flat tires, and several wrenches and other tools. The project was funded in part by a grant from CentraCare as part of their initiative to promote healthy and active living in the community.
Staff member Corrie Scott said the city was excited to see the project completed, and that more fixing stations may be implemented around the city in the future.
The station was set up at the train stop since the trains are bike friendly, and many people use their bikes to get around after getting off the train. It’s also an easy distance for residents at the new Station Street Apartments and the development off of Co. Rd. 43 S.
The idea to put in a fix-it station came from the city’s Bicycle Advisory Committee, which is dedicated to making Big Lake a bike-friendly city. Scott said the committee is always looking for new participants, and anyone who is interested can contact her at CScott@BigLakeMN.org. The committee hosts several events each year, in addition to implementing projects such as the fix it station. They organize bike rides and a bike rodeo, among other events.
