Becker welcomes new curriculum director

Carla Nolan began her position as Becker’s new curriculum director July 1, and she’s excited for the school year to start.

Nolan has a long career in education, previously working as a teacher and instructional coach in St. Cloud, a “Gifted and Talented” program coordinator in Big Lake, and a curriculum director in Robbinsdale.

Nolan decided to make the move to Becker as the schools have a solid reputation and curriculum. She also likes the small town feel and the ability to connect with people in the community. Nolan will be working to continue to carry out the mission of the school district and prepare students to thrive in an ever changing community.

The way to do this, Nolan says, is to start by creating a relationship with the students. The state determines the academic standards and teachers design lessons utilizing technology and evidence-based instructional strategies that meet student learning needs.

As teachers get to know students, they learn  what motivates the students, and use that information to better their lessons.

“Engaging students is the trick,” said Nolan, in reference to designing lesson plans that make an impact on the students.

Nolan expressed her excitement for the school year to begin, so she can start forming those relationships with students, families, and teachers that make learning successful. She said it’s important that everyone involved has a voice so educators can make the best decisions to support the students.

Nolan is currently living in the Albertville area. She and her husband, Dr. George Nolan (principal of Hopkins Elementary), have five sons, three grandkids, and a dog.
