A group of 100 youngsters gathered in the Becker High School field house last Friday for the annual Safety Camp, possibly the largest number of enrollees in the history of the program, according to organizer Michelle Peacock, Becker Community Ed. director. “It was the first year where we had to turn people away because we had no more room,” Peacock said.
The program consists of a mixture of fun events such as cookie breaks and a pizza supper, along with more serious topics like fitness exercises, do’s and don’ts of travel, what to do if you see smoke in your house, and how to use the 911 phone number in case of emergency. The kids also got to see a canine demonstration, and learned how to properly care for the American flag from members of the Becker American Legion Post 193.
Among the volunteers and staff were pastor Rob Olsen from the Becker Baptist Church, a long-time supporter of the Safety Camp idea, Officer Jason Lawson from the Becker Police Dept., Becker City Councilwoman Tracy Bertram, Tanya Danielson, Lori Keller, Julie Baloun, Angel Hubbard and Veronica Peacock.
Representing the American legion were John Riebel, Roger Bigalke and Walter Eads, Jr. As part of the program, members of Boy Scout Troop 92 Christopher Kardell and Corbin Lozinski demonstrated the proper method for folding an American flag, as Bigalke read a document that explained the meaning of each specific fold during the ceremony.
