Cade Stommes and Makenna Thelan, two NHS (National Honor Society) students at Becker High School, led a “Winter Warm-Up” project. Stommes and Thelan (along with other students) made tie blankets to donate to Pathways 4 Youth in St. Cloud, a resource center for young people who are experiencing homelessness.
The NHS project was inspired by the cold spell back in October. The students thought that those who were homeless were struggling at that point, and would continue to struggle throughout the winter months.
They had several area businesses sponsor the project, including Angells Construction, Hubbard Electrical, Scheideman Chiropractic, Sherburne State Bank, H.O.P.E Stables, T.J. Potter Trucking, Northern Metals Recycling, Dr. Stephanie Gruenes Dentistry, and individuals in the Becker Community.
“This event was only able to be successful because of the donations from the Becker community and the NHS students who put in the time to make the blankets,” Stommes said. “We would like to extend a big thank-you to everyone who helped make this event a success!”
The students raised $1,900 to use in purchasing materials for the blankets
The blankets were donated to Pathways 4 Youth last weekend. Students made the blankets at home, and 92 were ultimately donated.
