The Becker American Legion Post 193 celebrated a century of commradary and citizenship last Saturday, hosting a ‘birthday party’ for the public at the American Legion in Becker.
The building was filled with people, many dressed in patriotic colors, that came to help celebrate the anniversary. Along with refreshments, there were a number of photos and memorabilia available for guests to look at and reminisce over.
The Becker Legion received their charter on Nov. 15, 1920 with 16 members. Charles Rust was their first commander, Harry Spindler the first adjutant, Robert Haberman the first finance officer and J.C. Johnson the first service officer.
The Legion is named after Oscar E. Peterson, who was born in Becker Twp. in 1894 and passed away in 1918 while serving in the U.S. Army during WWI. Peterson is buried in France.
Along with unveiling the new Veterans Memorial during Freedom Days in June, the Becker Legion will continue to celebrate their 100 years with special events next summer and fall.
