Becker Freedom Days a huge success!

Last week, Becker wrapped up its Freedom Days events for the year. After not having the annual celebration last year, area businesses and organizations were excited to make this year spectacular.

SSB Customer Appreciation

On Wednesday, Sherburne State Bank held its annual customer appreciation lunch. Dozens of Becker area residents turned out for the event. Pronto Pups were served under a big tent, and there were bounce houses and games for the kids.

American Family Chip Repair

Amy Chmielewski, American Family Insurance, agent offered free windshield repair in front of her office on First St. Each windshield took about 15 minutes to fix, and the service (normally a $75-$100 cost) was completely free for anyone who wished to participate. Chmielewski stated that cars started lining up at 9:30 a.m. for the event which started at 10 a.m., and there was not a moment of down time for most of the day.

Free will donations were accepted on behalf of Becker Backpack Buddies.

Professional Building Drive Through Lunch

On Thursday, the Becker Professional Building, including Kent Marketing, D&V Enterprises, Healing Spirits Massage, Oasis Homes, Insight Eye Care, Wells Fargo, Attain Development, and National Realty Guild, held their eighth annual drive through lunch in their parking lot. They served some delicious burgers and brats for two hours, asking for $5 donations to the Becker Food Shelf for each lunch. The fee was waived for servicemen and women from the BPD and BFD.

Becker Farmers’ Market

The weekly Becker Farmers’ Market took place on Friday in its usual spot in the Becker Furniture World parking lot. A live band played for the entertainment of the shoppers and the several residents who brought folding chairs to enjoy the live performance. Several vendors attended, selling a variety of items, from home-grown mushrooms, delicious deserts, scented soaps, and creative crafts. The farmers’ market takes place every week on Fridays from 3-6 p.m.

Veterans’ Memorial Dedication

The dedication of the veterans’ memorial at city hall took place on Friday at 5 p.m. Several individuals spoke during the dedication, including members of the American Legion, Sen. Mary Kiffmeyer, Jim Newberger, Mayor Tracy Bertram, Sheriff Joel Brott, and project organizers Roger Bigalke and Al Scherping. A color guard was present, and the Becker Boy Scouts also were in attendance to pay tribute.

Freedom Days 5K Run

The Freedom Days 5K was postponed this year. It may be rescheduled for this fall, but a definitive time has not yet been set.

Legion Party

The Becker American Legion held a party at the Legion Hall (old fire hall) on Friday evening. Burgers and brats, baked beans, and chips were sold by the Legion. The Becker Lions sold alcoholic drinks. A live band played music for the many customers in attendance.

Saturday’s Events

Saturday was when the town-wide celebration came to a head, starting with the parade in the morning. After the parade, there were performances by Starz and Just for Kix dance teams. Becker Township featured historical exhibits in town hall as a 150 year celebration of the township. Kids’ games, petting zoo, pony rides, food and beverages were offered downtown starting at 12:30. Saturday evening was the Becker Block Party featuring Junk FM cover band. At 10 p.m., the annual fireworks display ended the festivities for the year.
