BASC holds ribbon cutting at new BCC location

The Becker Area Senior Center (BASC) officially opened in their new location on Tuesday. The BASC is now located at the Becker Community Center (BCC), having previously resided at City Hall.

Carol Brunn, one of the BASC’s leaders, said the organization was very happy with the new location. She said the BCC would be a big help going forward, through taking calls for the BASC, allowing the seniors to use the building’s facilities, providing outdoor space, and providing possibilities for expansion.

“This is where we were meant to be,” Brunn said.

Ribbon Cutting

The ribbon cutting ceremony was well-attended by senior center members, city council and staff representatives, Supt. Jeremy Schmidt from the Becker Schools, and members of the Becker Chamber of Commerce. After the ceremony, attendees drew lots to win door prizes and socialized over rootbeer floats.

The ribbon cutting was an important event for the Becker Chamber of Commerce, as well. It is the first ribbon cutting ceremony that was planned by the Chamber Ambassadors, according to chamber member Eric Hanson, Media Account Executive for Arvig.

“The Ambassadors reached out to the city and the other businesses,” Hanson said. “We were able to bring everyone together.”

Hanson said the Ambassadors were excited to hold another ribbon cutting later in the month, for Stars’ Dance Studio, who recently upgraded their location. The ceremony will take place on the 31st.

Upcoming Senior Center Events

After the attendees settled down with their floats and prizes, Brunn took a moment to remind everyone of the many upcoming events the BASC will be hosting.

There will be a potluck lunch at the City Park August 17 featuring music by the Silver Sluggards band. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m., while the event officially begins at 9 a.m.

August 20, there will be a “Lunch on the Run” event at Los Ortizes at 11:30 a.m.

A class on Dementia Caregiver Support by Tami Kolbinger will be held from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. August 25. Brunn said this was a phenomenal class she’s taken before and highly recommends, as it vastly increases understanding of how to be the best possible caregiver and manage one’s emotions in such a difficult situation.
