Last Saturday Barktober Fest was back and bigger than ever! The second annual event was moved to Becker City Park this year, replacing Harvest Fest, and drawing an estimated crowd of 600.
“With Barktober Fest we were looking at creating an event that was different then your typical Harvest and October Fests,” said Bartt Gevens, BCC manager and planning committee member. “What started as a small idea has grown to a big event. We wanted to create an event that was not only for dog lovers, but also families and those looking to enjoy a great day outside in October.”
From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the park was filled with two and four-legged attendees, most dressed in costume. Adults, kids and dogs of all shapes and sizes spent the afternoon visiting 33 vendor booths, playing games and getting to know each other.
Many of the guests were in matching or themed attire, like the Aeshliman family who came dressed as characters from the Mario game. Their pooch, Zeppelin, was in disguise as the headless horseman.
There were games for attendees to try their hand at, including a bean bag tournament, doggie musical chairs and costume contests for pets, kids and adults. Hay rides, pony rides and inflatables were also popular.
Live music from Fred the Bear and food were available for those who wanted to take a break and relax.
Pets and their owners lined up for the pet contests, providing tough competition. In the ‘best smile’ contest, Sebastian the Yorkshire terrier, who arrived with owner Stephanie Henrichs, beat out the other doggy grins to win first prize.
There was even tougher competition during the ‘best pet talent/trick’ contest. Dogs showed off their best, from one who balanced treats on her nose to a number who shook hands. Winnie the mini golden doodle was awarded 1st place after she did an entire routine that included kisses, high 5s, shaking hands, dancing and spinning. She was attended by her family and owner Carlie Haben.
Special guests at the event were Ethan Haus and his family, along with their hero dog, Remington, who was honored for staying by Ethan’s side when he was lost.
To keep space at the park open, attendees were encouraged to park at Pebble Creek Golf Course, where a free shuttle service provided transportation for everyone (pets welcome!) to and from the park throughout the event.
“This year exceeded our expectations,” said Gevens. “The community really enjoyed an event that had a little something for everyone. We look forward to continuing to grow and improve this great event.”
Barktober Fest sponsors included St. Cloud Subaru, Liberty Paper, Kris Lindahl Real Estate, Norm’s Farm Market, Wruck Sewer and Portable Rental, All Purpose Rental Becker, Snake River Farm, Home Depot Monticello and PetSmart Monticello.
Organizers extended thanks to all, stating the event could not have been possible without the help from many community helpers and volunteers from local organizations, including Becker National Honor Society, Becker Lions, Girls Scouts, Cub Scouts, 4-H, Faith Lutheran Church families and Miss Minnesota United States 2019.
