Saturday, dogs and their masters (or is it the other way around?) had a howling good time at the city-endorsed, Barktober Festival at Becker City Park.
The three hour event featured pet and kid parades, costume contests, crafts, games, activities and numerous pet-related vendor booths. There were also concessions and food trucks in the general area.
The pet and kiddo costume contest registration commenced precisely at 11 a.m. and ran for a half-an-hour. Kids were encouraged to don their Halloween costumes with a shot at a prize. Of course, the mutts were encouraged to wear something fun and many dog parents did just that — dressing their lady pups in superhero costumes or simply a hat or a scarf.
The kiddo parade kicked off at noon and the pet parade began shortly thereafter, around 1 p.m.
Dog owners were asked to ensure their pets had up-to-date vaccinations (hmmm, sounds familiar) and that they are socially comfortable around other dogs, children and adults.
Christina Moreno, a trainer and groomer at Canine Cabin had a group or workers with her at their booth along with Gonzo, a Landseer Newfoundland, who was named 2021 Barktober Fest Spokesdog. Runner’s up were Jeter, Colin, Norman and Duke.
Bouncy Castles were popular attractions at Saturday’s event along with laser tag, face painting, rope the cow, rat race, ping pong toss and a fishing game. Members from the local Great River Regional Library were on hand as well as BASC, Edward Jones Financial, Pink Zebra, Color Street Nails, Elk River’s Edge Creations, Thirty-One and professional photos by Inspired by KJ Photography.
A trophy was handed out to best human costume, best dog costume and spokesdog runners-up.
