Are Drugs A Problem At Bhs? Stay Tuned...

Becker High School — along with the Citizen-Tribune — recently received an anonymous letter from a group of parents concerned that drugs are being sold and distributed during school hours.

This reporter followed up with an email to Asst. Principal Brian Baloun and had a chat with Principal David Kreft before a school activity this week. Baloun noted he would pass along the email to Supt. Jeremy Schmidt while Kreft reported it may take a little while to sort out the letter’s truths and proceed with a process to inform the anxious parents.

The letter indicated that “many high school parents” have learned that drugs are being sold during school hours in the bathrooms out of Altoid containers. According to the letter, children have been offered every type of drug outside of heroin and students are also reportedly vaping in classrooms while some have been identified as smelling of marijuana.

The writer of the letter also mentioned the school’s drug-free policy on their website has not been revised since September of 2016.

Kreft, Schmidt and other school officials had official responses to the allegations in the letter, and those responseds will be included in next week’s Citizen-Tribune.

The author of the letter mentioned inspections, sweeps, locker checks and having a police presence in the schools. It also suggested more speakers be brought in who have personally dealt with drugs and alcohol and to open the events up for the parents to attend.

The letter closed with the following quote: “We are not signing this letter as individuals as we do not want our children singled out in our small town. There are many options for your organization to address this letter in an open and public format. This would be greatly appreciated.”

The letter was “CC-d” to Becker Police Chief Brent Baloun, School Board Members Jason Kindred and Aaron Jurek, Supt. Jeremy Schmidt and the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Dept.

Again, see next week’s Citizen-Tribune for a rebuttal from the school and statistics and comparisons from BHS to the county to the state.
