Alzheimer’s Group Has Local Outreach Plans

The ACT on Alzheimer’s-Becker group is in the process of finalizing a number of local outreach programs that will continue well into the fall, according to the results of the recent Action Team meeting.

According to the meeting notes from ACT organizer Tami Kolbinger, the group will be hosting a special screening of “I’ll Be Me,” the film that depicts singer Glenn Campbell’s on-going struggle with Alzheimer’s.  Following a 6 p.m. reception, the film will be shown at 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 14 in the Performing Arts Center at Becker High School.  Signs will be given to local businesses, and the information will also appear on the digital sign boards at the Becker Community Center and the Citizen’s State Bank.

ACT will not take part in the Becker Freedom Days parade on Sat., June 20, it was decided, but the group will have an informational booth at the site on Hancock Street.

The group will also be working with area businesses to develop “Dementia Friendly” businesses, and plans to offer classes on the topic through the Becker Community Education program.  The group is also hoping to bring speakers into area schools to share information with students, and is seeking two locations to serve as “Alzheimer’s libraries” around the area which will contain books purchased by the group.

Other activities planned include a screening of the film “Still Alice” in November, the same month which will see a community party to mark national Alzheimer’s Month in the area.
