ACEC/MN recognizes 31 projects including NMR

Feb. 26, the American Council of Engineering Companies, Minnesota (ACEC Minnesota) announced the 2021 recipients of its annual Engineering Excellence Awards at its 54th Annual program.

SEH (Short, Elliott, Hendrickson, Inc.) was on the list twice — once for their work on the Northern Metals Recycling plant in Becker’s Industrial Park.

Gov. Tim Walz delivered prerecorded remarks recognizing Minnesota’s “World Class Infrastructure”.

The competition recognizes engineering achievements that exhibit the highest degree of merit and ingenuity. Entries were judged based on originality and innovation; future value to the engineering profession; social, economic and sustainable design considerations; complexity; and meeting the client’s needs.

The 2021 Engineering Excellence Grand Award winners were:

Alliant Engineering - 8th Street Reconstruction; American Engineering Testing - TH 63 Bridge over Mississippi River H-Pile Downdrag Monitoring; Barr Engineering - Island Lake Dam Gate Upgrade; Braun Intertec - ASTM Standard Test Methods for Carbon-Consuming Cements Hardened by Carbonation; Donohue & Associates - Nutrient Recovery and Reuse (NR2): Innovative, Cost Effective, Sustainable; Kimley Horn - Silver Ramp Expansion; MEP Associates (a Salas O-Brien company) - Madison Municipal Building; Short Elliott Hendrickson Inc. - Duluth Sky Harbor Airport; Short Elliott Hendrickson Inc. - Northern Metals Shredder Site; SRF Consulting - Central Draw Overflow Phase V; Steen Engineering - The Fillmore Theater and Element by Westin at Target Field Station; Wenck - Biochar- and Iron-Enhanced Sand Filter (BIESF) Large-scale Demonstration Projects; Widseth - Digi-Key Electronics Product Distribution Center Expansion; WSP - MnDOT I-494/I-94 Interchange Bridge Replacement Utilizing Accelerated Bridge Construction Techniques.

In addition to the 14 Grand Awards, 17 projects received Honor Awards from the following firms: Bolton & Menk, Inc., Brown & Caldwell, HR Green, Kimley-Horn, Rani En, Short Elliott Hendrickson Inc, SRF Consulting, Stantec, Stonebrooke Engineering, Wenck – now a part of Stantec, and WSB.

The Grand Conceptor Award, which recognizes the highest scoring project by the judging panel, was awarded to Donohue & Associates and the City of St. Cloud for Nutrient Recovery and Reuse (NR2): Innovative, Cost Effective, Sustainable. The People’s Choice Award, presented to the firm that received the highest number of votes by event attendees, was awarded to Wenck, a Stantec company and the City of Crystal for Becker Park Underground Stormwater Infiltration.
