Ten different fire departments from area fire stations responded to an 11 a.m. call Monday morning for a large barn that was on fire in Clear Lake. It took firefighters over 12 hours to extinguish the blaze and save several nearby outbuildings, sheds and silos.
The call came in to Clear Lake FD at about 10:45 a.m. in the 10,000 block of 92nd Avenue in Clear Lake Twp. The property is owned by Steve Beck.
Clear Lake Assistant Fire Chief Chad McKay said the homeowners had a burn pile going on outside, which spread to an old barn, causing the barn to go up in flames. The fire progressed across their property, making its way towards a newly-built pole shed.
McKay says the combined fire departments used around 800,000 gallons of water before the fire was finally doused at around 11 p.m.
“The majority of time and water was spent on extinguishing the 1,500 large round bales that had caught fire,” said McKay.
The homeowners were not hurt but a few fire fighters suffered minor injuries. It was also reported that McDonald’s Meats, the Clear Lake BP and Big D’s Pizza helped out by bringing food and beverages to the feed the firefighters during the 12-hour ordeal.
Two structures were lost in the fire and the barn was a total loss. Fire crews, however, were able to save the pole shed that was attached to the old barn.
