To The Editor

I read with interest the article entitled "Bollig: Probation in Maurer deaths" that was published in the Saturday, March 12, 2016 edition of the Citizen-Tribune. I do not know Carlee Bollig, nor did I know Charles Maurer or his daughter. I was there, however, driving home about 20 minutes after the accident happened. It was obvious something horrible had happened seeing the mangled wreck at the intersection at Hwy 10 and County Road 11. In the weeks that followed, I learned through the media that Miss Bollig was texting while driving which caused the accident and the deaths of Maurer and his daughter. I don't know what the proper punishment is for such a thing. The article quoted him as saying: "Maturity-wise, she's not 17. She's probably a lot younger than that. She hasn't had a lot of life experiences." To me, that tells me that every time I get behind the wheel of my car, to drive to work, to drive to the grocery store, or to drive my wife to her doctor appointments, that I have to worry about some immature girl driving a car while texting to her Facebook account. Would you allow, for example, an unsupervised 12 year old to shoot a rifle over the heads of a crowd at the county fair in Elk River? Would you allow a 15 year old to blow up a stick of dynamite after school lets out in the crowded parking lot of Becker High School? Perhaps we, as a society, need to re-think the age and maturity level at which we allow an un-supervised kid access to a 5,000 pound vehicle driving down Hwy 10 at 65 miles per hour. I know that I will be a whole lot more cautious in the future when approaching the intersection of Hwy 10 and County Road 11.
