To The Editor

On May 25th the Hunger Free Sherburne County held a Lunch and Learn of “Life Happens” at the Friendly Buffalo in Big Lake.  The Lunch and Learn was facilitated by Dr. Tracy Ore, Department of Sociology from St. Cloud State University.

Each participant in “Life Happens” exercised a better understanding of the realities local people face living on the edge of poverty, gain a better understanding of local food access issues, learned more about food insecurity resources that are available, understand the opportunities to support our local communities.

I would like to thank the many community representatives for participating, as well as the group from Hunger Free Sherburne County for hosting this true “Life Happens” experience.  Thanks to the involvement from our local mayors of Becker, Mayor Lefty Kleis and Big Lake, Raeanne Danielowski in recognizing the concern for hunger relief resources in our communities.

Seniors (adults 65 years old and older) are the fastest growing group of food shelf users.  From 2011 to 2015, the number of food shelf visits by seniors rose 23.7% (statistic provided by Hunger Solutions).

Food insecurity and hunger, affects all age groups.  Please support your local food shelf with money, food, personal care products, and clothing.  Open your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless the month of July.  The more funds the food shelf raises in July, the larger the matching grant from Hunger Solutions in winning Minnesota’s Food Fight.
