My Little Rant

Well, it’s about halfway through the summer and that means fairs, fireworks, and the Minnesota Twins are over halfway through their season. The impressive thing about this is they still have a winning record, as of July 19th, their record was 50-44 and center fielder Byron Buxton is leading the way.

So far this season he has 23 home runs and is seventh in the entire league. While he’s been hitting out of the park, second baseman Jorge Polanco has been getting everyone to home plate with 48 runs batted in that leads the team. On the other end of things, they’ve had a number of pitchers throughout the season.

Two of them are tied with six wins a piece, Joe Ryan and Dylan Bundy. Ryan has 66 strikeouts while Bundy has 60. While the regular season is going well, the MLB All-Star game also had some Twins members on the roster this past week. Both Buxton and Luis Arraez took part in the game and each had a hit. Buxton also hit a home run in what was his very first All-Star game appearance. Hopefully the Twins can keep both the hitting and winning going and have a deep playoff run.

I haven’t been able to watch much of the Twins lately but I’ve seen a lot of notifications about rain delays this season. This summer seems like it’s been hotter than in the past and I can’t imagine what that’s been like on these players. Playing outside most of the time during the hottest part of the day and even the evenings have been overly warm.

Speaking of warm, while that was a quick update on the Twins, there are some other athletes who don’t get mentioned very often and it’s probably not considered a sport but marching band kids deserve some credit during these hot summer months. Yes, I marched of course, which is why I think it should be either considered a sport or given equal attention.

It is a physical activity but I can understand why some may think it doesn’t deserve that recognition. This summer I was able to go on a small road trip to the cities and watch my alma mater march. They of course did an amazing job as always and it still surprises me to this day I was able to do all that stuff! Marching in a straight line while staying disciplined and also memorizing both a show and music. It’s pretty impressive stuff! Oh, and you can’t look down or around, only straight ahead!

If you’ve never paid close attention to a marching band before, watch one. You won’t be disappointed. Plus, the bonus thing about marching band, at least the one I marched in, there’s no sitting on the bench. Everyone gets to participate and it’s one of the best choices I ever made that included lifelong friendships and a sense of belonging that will last forever no matter how many years pass.

Now that I’ve gone on that little rant, to wrap it up. I hope the Twins can keep up the winning and make everyone proud, plus I’ll be trying to catch my former marching band later in the summer and third this weather is ridiculous. As much hate as I’ll get for saying this, I’m sick of the heat and humidity, give me a balmy 50-degree day over 90 degrees and 100 percent humidity!

One final note, July 19th, was my husband and my’s third anniversary of owning our own house! Pretty exciting stuff, we also got engaged that day three years ago! Crazy how fast time flies, hope everyone is doing well and good luck surviving this crazy heat! Stay hydrated!
