Letters To The Editor

TO THE EDITOR:

Thank you for the fantastic story on History Day superstars from Big Lake Middle School.  I know from experience that National History Day is a challenging program for students in grades 6 - 12, and that teachers and judges donate a lot of time to instruct and encourage kids in discerning factual, primary source information from “fake news,” as well as the skills described in the article by Ms Bischoff.  It’s exciting when our students make it to the State competition, and then hopefully, to National History Day in Washington D.C.  Over 500,000 students nationwide take part in National History Day, but, sadly, it will no longer be funded due to cuts by Republicans to the National Endowment of the Arts.   The indiscriminate cuts by DOGE and those who enable and cheer them on are demolishing the educational opportunities our kids deserve.

TO THE EDITOR:

Honestly, the rantings of Marlys Kolbinger needs a reply. I am no scholar, but can easily see the that the injection of government spending into the economy during Covid and after, (money supply increased 33%) diminished everyones purchasing power. As for inflation: What did you think would happen when you flood the market with government (free) money? Just like a shopping spree on  your credit card, the bill comes due. Our country is facing some huge decisions soon. The “What is in it for me” attidude needs to stop very soon.

TO THE EDITOR:

I’ve got a proposal. Instead of Congressman Tom Emmer and President Trump showering tax cuts on their billionaire buddies, why not target tax relief to working and middle class families dealing with high inflation? And why not eliminate Federal Income taxes on Social Security for seniors? Seniors such as myself dealing with the high prices of food and gas have to work to help ends meet. Why should we be penalized for continuing to work? Trump’s billionaire pals are already amassing more and more wealth and not paying their fair share. The tax system needs to be reformed to help everyday working people!
