Letter to Editor

TO THE EDITOR:

“The Ends justify the Means.”

Do they really? When Satan tells Jesus that if He bows down to him the whole world would be his, Satan wasn’t being deceitful. As ruler of the Earth, Satan would have given over that power and Jesus could have claimed the Earthly throne for himself, making the world perfect. No more wars or homelessness. No more...abortions (yeah, abortions were around then, too).

But what does Jesus do? He says, “Nah, man”, because the Ends never justify the Means. Whereas many of us Evangelical Christians have to overlook the Means (Trump’s divisiveness) to achieve our Ends (Republican Justices, etc.), the way I see it, I can’t deny that Biden is a more (still, not perfect) Presidential leader. Someone who will at least attempt to bring people together - even if some of his Ends might not be what I, personally, feel is best.

Christianity isn’t filling in a circle the “right” way every four years. It involves relationships. Before voting, then, we ask: do I know the people who will be most negatively affected by my choice? Illegal immigrants? Women struggling with the reality of raising a child in poverty? The 90% of Black Protestants voting for Biden? My LGBTQ+ neighbor? Because if I don’t know these people…

I’m more like the older son in the prodigal story, saying “This is the right thing” but doesn’t love. And if that’s who the younger son meets in the field...I don’t think he’s making it home. So be careful in voting the “right” way this year. Instead, consider the “loving” way.
