TO THE EDITOR:
In August Sheriff Deringer attended the Trump rally in Mankato, saying that his community supported his presence (The Patriot, August 29). Some of us do not support his presence there. And in his official uniform, Sheriff Deringer spoke at the Oct. 14 Trump rally in Buffalo. This is noteworthy because the law enforcement uniform is an important public symbol - representing safety, security, and service to the community. It also conveys authority, power, control and, for many, fear. Officers are instructed that the first step in the continuum of force is the mere presence of a uniformed officer. Therefore, under the U.S. Hatch Act, it is illegal to use the uniform to influence, interfere with, or affect an election.
There is some debate whether Sheriffs, as elected officials, are exempt from this law. However, while it may be legal, it is unethical and intimidating for those who do not share Sheriff Deringer’s political views. Wright County citizens deserve better. The Sheriff’s duty is to serve and protect, not inflame fear and political division. We call on the sheriff to cease and desist and apologize to the citizens for his lapse of judgment.
