This time of year brings wonderful memories from Christmas long ago.
I can’t help but reflect on the joys of being a kid, Carefree and full of excitement. The snow was a welcomed sight. The more we had the better. It seems like we had so much in the 1970’s.
Going sliding, skating, playing king of the hill and making snow angels were just a few things I enjoyed. And, the tradition of cutting down our own tree was a favorite. The parties at school were fun and amped the excitement for winter break.
Christmas cards hung around the door and some presents came by mail. We baked plenty of the Christmas tree, bells and star sugar cookies for people stopping by.
Sometimes we would see our cousins for Christmas and get to play. Grandma and grandpa were always there.
I looked forward to the Christmas programs at St. John’s Lutheran Church. I didn’t mind the Saturday morning practices, as the spirit of the season was ever present.
My first program, I was about four years old. It was Christmas Eve night and a small group of us kids sang, Away in a Manager. We belted that song out like only four year olds can. I remember the warm feeling I had singing, as if it was to Jesus himself. There are no words to describe when I think back to that time.
After the church program, we came home and had to go to bed. Santa wouldn’t come if we were up. Through the night, I thought I heard a noise on the roof. It must have been the reindeer. I remained still in bed, so Santa wouldn’t know I was awake.
Christmas morning came early. We stayed upstairs and played games until mom and dad were ready. When they said, “okay,” we flew down the stairs to find presents under the tree. We must have been good. We played for hours and enjoyed the warmth of home.
I look back on those years with mom and dad. They made our Christmases special. Memories etched in my heart. They are the cornerstone for our Christmases today.
There’s a beautiful energy that lingers around this time of year - a sense of peace and good will. God infused I believe.
I know in spirit, mom and dad are with us, “If only in my dreams.”
